On June 17, 2021 President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day act into law making June 19, otherwise known as Juneteenth, a federal holiday. The celebration commemorates June 19, 1865 when union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger enforced General Order No. 3 which marked the official end to slavery in the United States.
