Solar Coronameter telescope seen through the slit of its protective dome at the High Altitude Solar Observatory facility at Mauna Loa, Hawaii. The Coronameter observes the white-light component of the Sun's outer atmosphere (corona). The Coronameter uses a disk to block out the brightness of the Sun's surface which normally drowns out the corona around it. Coronagraphs such as this are always placed at high altitude sites to reduce atmospheric scattering of the incoming light.
