The charts are presented here as an example of the way in which oneautomobile manufacturer is going about a study of theproblem and as a preliminary report on the results whichhave been attained. A Sinusoidal Type Differential A POSITIVE-DRIVE differential of the sinusoidaltype designed by A. T. Nogrady has been the sub-ject of investigation by the General Motors Co. and otherconcerns in the industry. The differential is fitted withthe bevel pinion and side gears in the usual manner. How-ever, the bevel gears are fitted with either helical splinesor sinusoidal cams that engage with external and internalmembers, the latter a portion of a member fitted to, of. A ./ . ..; differ-ential. .1, cant;B, differentialbevel geai . (. clutch laces; I). ■. axlshafts integral with, the main axle shaft. When the traction in either of the rear wheels varies, the cam shown in the drawing at A tends to thrust the dif-ferential bevel gear, or side gear B, against clutch facesC, thereby setting up a frictional load which is trans-mitted to the cage D as a torsional load, and thus to themain axle shafts E. When operating under ordinary conditions, the effectdue to the cam is to thrust the side gears inward andaway from the provision for friction, and since theclutching faces are brought to bear one against the other, the thrust is equalized between the inner and outer clutch-ing faces.
