I speak fiom the first of June the great host of the birdsis nesting, and what is so rare as a day inJune,—or in May, either,—with the camera !A small tent improvised from an old umbrella,with the socket-stand driven into the ground anda thin cloth canopy fitted over it, dyed to thecolor of the surroundings, can be pitched be-side the nest of a bird or the hole or burrow ofsome animal, and experience will prove thatpatient waiters are no losers in this GREAT HORNED OWL RETURNING TO NEST AND YOUNG. (Part of a rabbit lies on the edge of the nest. The camerawas rigged up near the nest, in a neighboring tree, and theexposure made at an opportune time by a thread from abower 100 yards off in the woods. So far as known, this isthe first photograph of the great horned owl from wild life.) There are yet many species of which no indi-vidual has hitherto been photographed, and agood picture even of the commonest bird or ani-mal is of great value and interest. Hardly anytwo are ever alike. If one be especially fond ofthe regular game birds, why in the worhl isit not just as fine sport as shooting—and better—to hunt out the secreted nest and photographthe bird on the nest ?
