Times Square, an iconic world landmark and symbol of both New York City and the USA, is a major commercial intersection at the junction of Broadway, Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street. Formerly named Longacre Square, it was renamed Times Square in April 1904, when the New York Times moved its headquarters to the new Times Building, a 25 storey, 110 metres (395 ft) skyscraper at the junction of Broadway and 42 Street. The Times Tower, the 2nd tallest building on Manhattan when newly opened, was sold in 1961. Its colourful advertisements generate a monthly income of between $100,000 and $250,000 (or $10,000 per hour).Traffic moves south along 7th Avenue, here near the Playwright Irish Pub at West 49th Street.
