The question of brakes for electric railway cars has recently at-tracted considerable attention in England on account of a numberof accidents due to the want of sufficiently powerful brakes. TheBoard of Trade has taken a decided stand in this matter with theresult that in several cases the opening of new lines has been de-layed until more effective brakes are procured. While a number of accidents has been caused by runaway carson grades, the greater number of accidents has occurred on per-fectly level roads where passengers or vehicles have attempted tocross in front of the cars. In cases of emergency the wheel brakeshave been found quite insufficient and the weight and speed of elec-tric cars demand a brake which is capable of almost instantaneousapplication and which requires but little physical exertion on thepart of the driver, so that his attention is not attracted from hisother duties.
