Budd-Chiari syndrome. Light micrograph of a section of liver affected by Budd-Chiari syndrome. This is a rare syndrome that may occur as a result of any condition that obstructs blood flow from the small hepatic vein (white, centre) to the inferior vena cava. Budd-Chiari syndrome can lead to enlargement of the liver (hepatomegaly), jaundice (yellowing of the skin), ascites (fluid build-up in the abdomen), and kidney failure. Treatment is of the underlying cause.
