Surgical blood test. Image 2 of 2. Display of a blood testing machine. The machine is testing for blood levels of haemoglobin, an essential blood chemical that transports oxygen around the body. This is a healthy reading. Haemoglobin levels must be monitored during surgery to prevent excessive loss due to bleeding. This is the end result of a simple two-step process. A microcuvette (not seen) is brought into contact with the blood sample, automatically absorbing the correct volume of blood by capillary action. The sample is placed in the machine and the reading displayed. This machine is a HemoCue photometer. For an image of the blood sample, see M550/688.
