T^HIS is the handsomest member of the genus whichincludes the Ruffed Grouse of America. It is a beautiful bird, its richred plumage relieved by black markings, and the orange,red, black, and white under tail-coverts render it a veryattractive object, alive or dead. It is very plentiful incertain parts of British Columbia, and it is difficult tofind a more striking object than this bird as it walkssedately before you, flipping out, with quick repeatedjerks, the feathers of the tail, occasionally spreading itout to the fullest extent, and elevating and depressingthe crest of
