It hasthe same disadvantage as the Nileslocks, that the ordinary form of knoband spindle cannot be used with from the latch, this lock pre-sents nothing out of the usual line. Figure 314 is a type of a make oflocks which for simplicity of design, carefulness of execution and for goodlasting qualities is hardly excelled by Fig. in the market, except thebest hand-made work. The Yale Standard locks, asthey are termed, to distinguish them from the ordinary Yalepin locks, are made with steel levers, and brass springs, bolts and follows. They are so perfectly simple as to requireno description. The best forms of springs, levers, and followsare used in these locks, so that they seldom fail to give satis-faction. Excepting Figure 307, all of the foregoing locks aremachine-made, the levers being hand-fitted only in the bestgrades. Figure 315 shows one of Robinsons cheapest hand-. Enoch Robin- ORDINARY LOCK AND LATCH. made locks costing $ each, fitted with a single iron lever, bronze or brass being used only for the follow and the 31G is a better example of Robinsons work, costing$ per lock. In this the levers, as well as the bolts and the follow are of bronze, and the latch is fittedwith an anti-frictionstrike. The interior ofa machine-made lockusually is finer lookingthan that of one madeby hand, as in the latterall the care is concen-trated on the adjustmentof the me c h is no denying theexcellence of the Rob-inson locks, at least itwould be difficult to per-suade many Bostonbuilders that they arenot the best to be had,and although the locksare much more expen-sive than the best of theYale Standards or 201Chapter XI.
