Massachusetts Infantry regiments in which men enlisted from Oakhamare arranged in numerical order. These are followed by the Cavalryand Heavy Artillery. Within the regiment, those who enlisted from Oak-ham are placed before those born in Oakham or living here after the war,who enlisted from other towns. Oakham men who enlisted in otherstates are arranged alphabetically and placed after those who served inMassachusetts THE CIVIL WAR. Until the attack on Fort Sumter, it was not generally believedat the North that there would be war between the two North had lived so long in peace that it did not knowwhat the evils of war were, and was wholly unprepared for along and hard struggle. The young men were not accustomedto military training, and there was no such universal interestamong them in manly sports as is seen everywhere to-day. Butwhen war had actually begun, and it was evident that the Unioncould not be preserved without a conflict of arms, the men ofthe North responded promptly and seemed ready to make anysacrifice in defence of the government. The method of recruiting in Massachusetts differed from thatpursued in many of the states. In general, each Massachusettsregiment was raised from a comparatively small section of thestate, and each company in the regiment represented a town ora gr
