TOWNSEND, Edward Y., merchant and man-yiacturer, was born at West Chester, Pa., Oct. 4,1824, the son of John and Sybilla (Price) was the fifth in line of descent from Joseph1 ownsend, who came to America soon after the ar-rival of William Penn, and purchased a large tractof land ill Pennsylvania, on partof which the town of West Clies-ter is built. He left school ateighteen to enter the wholesaledry-goods house of Wood, Abbott& Co., of Philadelphia. As thisfirm had a large and profitabletrade in the South and West, made many businessjourneys for them on horsebackand alone through the frontier,going as far West as Santa Fe,N. M. Being a young man ofmuch energy, and possessing ad-mirable traits of character, he wassoon taken into partnership withhis firm, which w^as then Wood,Bacon & Co.
