The rubber drain is then attached asin Pauls operation. This procedure requires but a few min-utes, during which time but a small amount of gas and fecesescapes. The relief afforded by this procedure is mortality following this method of treating the bowel in COLOSTOMY 607 this class of cases is very much less than it is in those instancesin which the bowel is divided and the two ends of the intestineare stitched to the wound, as is done by some operators. Afterthe latter procedure the wound is almost certain to becomeinfected from the frequent discharge of gas and feces throughand over it. Robson has succeeded in reducing the distension in these
