MAZES - MAGIC SYMBOLS - NUMEROLOGY Plate 113 from the British Library Manuscript, Paradoxa, Emblemata, Aenigmata, Hieroglyphica, de Uno, toto, Puncto, Centro, by Dionysius Andreas Freher. Freher was born in Nuremberg in 1649, and was an important and influential disciple of the Rosicrucian, Jacob Boehme. His Paradoxa, consists of 153 emblems, seemingly designed as aids to meditation, each with a short text. The original design of Freher included a Latin text, written around the circumference of the Maze: this is the Latin version of the English written at the head and foot of the design. Ad Unum non Uno Saltu. Non Sine Ambagibus. [ "There is no coming to the One with one jump; and none, without going about"".] The Latin contains within it a numerology lacking in the English: the adages consist of 33 words - the number associated with Christ, who lived on earth for 33 years. This implies that the One [Unum] is indeed Christ. That much is already implied in the structure of thee maze (which is really no maze, but a dancing ground, like the so-called maze of Chartres): at the centre of the Freher design, on encounters the solar sigil - the Sun which, in Rosicrucianism, is frequently used as an emblem of Christ.
