Fig. 6 is from a photograph of the engines Celestial Empire and Flowery Land,designed by the author, and built by Messrs. Ransomes and Rapier, for the opening of the firstrailway in China. These engines weigh 9 tons in working order, and have wheels 2 feet 3 inchesdiameter. The quality of the water being bad, and the supply uncertain, they were madewith very large side tanks, so as to carry more than sufficient for a double trip. Full particulars
