Stem cell therapy, computer artwork. Umbilical cord blood (upper left) is a source of stem cells (blue) that are being studied for their potential use to treat disorders of the heart (lower left) and brain (lower right). The stem cells can be programmed to form cells of the required type, which are then injected into the heart or brain to replace dead or diseased cells. Stem cells can also be obtained from certain adult tissues, such as bone marrow, and from embryos. The latter, however, are controversial, and the former are more restricted in the range of different tissue types into which they can differentiate.
