Reduced overwinter survival a year after a severe winter may be indicative of cohort differences in survival and age at first repro- duction (Albon et al. 1987) resulting from the com- bination of the previous year's unfavourable weath- er and female biased harvest. The highest overwin- ter survival occurred during winter 1993-1994 when fall icing conditions were documented on a substantial proportion of the caribou winter range (Larter and Nagy 1994*).
