Explosion, coloured shadowgraph. Shadowgraphy is a type of flow visualisation, similar to but simpler than schlieren photography. Disturbances in an air flow can be seen by the shadows they cast. Here, a small explosion has been imaged about one millisecond after the explosion began. The explosive charge was one gram of triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in a small cardboard cylinder, suspended on a string. The image was exposed for 1 microsecond, and has captured the supersonic motion of the spherical blast wave and the fragments of the cardboard cylinder.
