Predicted path of the 1724 solar eclipse. Historical chart showing the predicted passage of the shadow of the moon, caused by the solar eclipse of 11th May 1724. This map was produced by William Whiston (1667-1752) and was thought to be more accurate than that of Edmond Halley (see image V700/0493), which was out by about 25 miles. The shadow (shaded band) passes through Ireland (upper left), southern England, France, Switzerland, and northern Italy (lower right). The times when the total eclipse will be seen in various cities, have been estimated along the lower edge. Publications like this (broadsides) were intended to make astronomical events accessible to everyday people, and to publicise the work of the scientists and publishers involved.
