Metabolic activity experiment on Skylab, 1973. US astronaut Alan Bean (born 1932) exercising on the ergometer on the US space station Skylab, which was in orbit from 1973 to 1979. Bean is breathing into the metabolic analyzer. Skylab's Metabolic Activity experiment (M171), a medical evaluation facility, was designed to measure the metabolic changes in astronauts to help design future missions and spacecraft. The inhaled and exhaled air was analysed, along with measuring pulse rate and blood pressure while the astronauts exercised on a bicycle ergometer. Bean was taking part in Skylab 3 (28 July to 25 September 1973), the second manned mission to Skylab.
