In 1851, he received a largeplurality of votes for the governorship, but the majorityrule threw the election into the Legislature. Mr. ^Vin-throp declined to run again, and has since devoted histime to literary, historical, and philanthropic occupa-tions. He did not, however, altogether relinquish hispolitical duties, but spoke eloquently for several candi-dates for the presidency, — Winfield Scott in 1852,Millard Fillmore in 1856, John Bell in i85o, and Gen-. ROBERT C, WINTHROP. eral McClellan in 1864. Four volumes of his Addressesand Speeches contain those on the laying of thecorner-stone of the national monument to Washingtonin 1848 and on the completion of that monument in1885, and the oration on the hundredth anniversary ofthe surrender of Cornwallis at Vorktown, all by invita-tion of Congress ; the address to the alumni of Harvardin 1857 ; an oration on the two hundred and fiftiethanniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims, in 1870; the Boston centennialoration, July 4, 1876 ;and an address onunveiling the statueof Colonel Prescotton Bunker Hill in1881.
