El Escorial, Spain


El Escorial was built by Philip II of Spain with work beginning in 1559. It was designed as a royal palace, monastery and as a symbol of Spain's role in the Christian world. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and is a popular tourist attraction.
