Among the most noted of her otherbooks are *^ Little Men, ^^Work, *^ Hospital Sketches, Old-Fashioned Girl, and Shawl Straps. More than amillion copies of her books were sold, and not less than$200,000 was paid her as royalty, a large part of whichwas used in adding to the happiness and comfort of Alexander H. Stephens no ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS 1812-1883 At the close of the War of the Revolution a certainCaptain Stephens of the patriot army found himself almostpenniless. He had been one of the Jacobites who fled fromEngland to America, and had taken part in the French andIndian War as well as in the later conflict. He settled inwhat is now Taliaferro County, Georgia, and brought up afamily of eight children. One of his sons became a school-teacher, and with his earnings purchased a farm of onehundred acres, where on February 11, 1812, Alexander was born. The boy was weak and delicate from his birth. Hisfather was very poor, and from his earliest childhood Alex-ander had to work, doing whatever his tender years andfrail body would permit. He had little opportunity foracquiring an education, partly because he must work, butchiefly because there were no schools save what were knownas field schools, which were usually presided over by veryine
