Bryant reports a cyst the size of a Tangerine orange, andSheild one the size of a small orange. Most of them were the size of hens eggs orwalnuts. The duration is usually stated to be a few months. In one of Sheildscases it is stated that there was a tumor in the left breast for an indefinite time. The cysts presented themselves as lumps in the breast. In one case the discoverywas made accidentally. In seven out of 20 cases there was tenderness, aching or painto direct attention to the breast. Two of the cases were suppurating and may nothave been previously painful, so that some kind of pain may have occurred only in one-fourth of the uncomplicated cysts. The lumps were usually rounded, sometimes nodular; they were sometimes very. Fig. 115.—Simple (benign) cyst of the breast. From aspecimen in the Laboratory of Surgical Pathology, MedicalSchool of the University of Pennsylvania. CYSTS OF THE BREAST 267 hard, sometimes soft and fluctuating. Fluctuation was naturally not easy to elicit incysts that were neither large nor superficial. One large superficial cyst is said to havebeen translucent like a hydrocele. The lumps were usually movable, unattachedto the skin or deeper structures, but occasionally, through inflammatory disturbance, they became adherent. There was no discoloration of the skin as a rule; Williamsobserved reddening of the skin in one of his cases, but in this case there had been in-flammation and the skin was adherent to the cyst. The nipples were normal exceptin the case of Williams, just mentioned, when they were congenitally retracted. Thelymphatic nodes were never affected. The chnical diagnosis was usually correctly made when
