[Ellyson was the first United States Navy officer designated as an aviator ('Naval Aviator No. 1'), taking part in the experimental development of aviation. Ellyson was awarded the Navy Cross for his antisubmarine service during World War I. He died when his aircraft crashed over the Chesapeake Bay in 1928].
