Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo hermanni). Female making an exploratory nest hole. Right foot scooping out soil which will be deposited alongside. A captive bred animal herself, she is attempting to nest and lay eggs to produce a second generation bred in captivity, in an English garden. Her parents would have been imported from the 'former Yugoslavia' area of south-east Europe.
