Newgate Prison was located in the City of London, England, UK. Built in the 12th century and demolished in 1904, the prison remained in use until 1902. After the prison was destroyed in the Great Fire, it was rebuilt. Construction was almost finished when it was stormed by a mob during the Gordon Riots in 1780. The building was again gutted by fire. The new prison was completed in 1782.
An old engraving showing the fire at Newgate Prison during the Great Fire of London in 1666. The original St Pauls Cathedral, also destroyed in the fire, can be seen in the background. Newgate Prison was located at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey Street just inside the City of London, England, UK – at the site of Newgate, a gate in the Roman London Wall. Built in the 12th century and demolished in 1904, the prison was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years (1188–1902). For much of its history, a succession of criminal courtrooms were attached to the prison and were commonly referred to as the 'Old Bailey'. The present Old Bailey (the Central Criminal Court) now occupies much of the site of the prison. After the prison was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, it was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. Construction was almost finished when it was stormed by a mob during the Gordon Riots in June 1780. The building was once more gutted by fire – the new prison was completed in 1782.
