M13 globular cluster. Optical image of M13, a globular star cluster that lies in the constellation Hercules. It is 150 light years across, 20,000 light years away and 12 billion years old. Globular clusters are old, roughly spherical systems containing hundreds of thousands of closely-packed stars. They formed early on in the history of the universe, around 12 billion years ago. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
