3D model of Ferdinandea volcano. This underwater volcano is located in the Mediterranean, some 30 kilometres off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily. There are two peaks seen here. The peak on the right, Graham Bank, is only seven metres below the surface of the sea. The peak on the left is 32 metres deep. Volcanic activity on Ferdinandea has been reported for over 2000 years, and the volcano has emerged from the sea, and then eroded away again, several times. One of the most recent emergences, in 1831, led to a territorial dispute between Sicily, France and England. England named the volcano Graham Island. Ferdinandea is part of the larger volcanic complex of Empedocles, which is 400 metres high and tens of kilometres across.
