INVESTIGATIONS AT AS SOS, 1883. 125 was made equal in width to that of the sides, can only beexplained by the adoption, in these spaces, of compartmentscontaining the same number of coffers. More than this :the arrangement of the ceiling must have been determined atthe same time as was that simple system of numerical propor-tions which is to be traced throughout the plan. The widthof the compartments was so calculated as to give, when takensix and ten times respectively, the width of the peripterosand the length of the cella. The factor is here of such mag-nitude, exceeding two meters, that it is not possible to bemistaken in the recognition of its multiples. The knownirregularities of the structure, amounting at most to somecentimeters, have scarcely to be taken into considerationin this regard. An agreement of the main dimensions, soexact as that set forth in the points in question, certainlyfurnishes a convincing proof of the correctn
