. Annual report of the Railroad and Warehouse Commission of the State of Illinois . he track of the St. L., P. & N. Ry Co. is provided withsafety stops in lieu of derails. Referring to the track plan, it will be observedthat the safety stops or track instruments are located on the track close to theoutside of the rail and sixty (60) feet in advance of the semaphores. Thetrack instrument, of course, works in connection with the correspondingsignal and remains in a raised position until the signal clears. Should anapproaching train fail to receive a clear signal, the track instrument in itsraised position engages a piston of the engine equipment, which is pushed up,thereby opening a valve in a branch of the train pipe, releasing the air andapplying the brakes. Next in order for use of the brake setting apparatus on the track of the , P. & N. Ry Co. is the engine equipment, which is located on the pilot ofthe engine and on either side of it. While this equipment is very strong andsimple in its character, its operation is very delicate and susceptible to the. ligrhtest touch. In order to prevent it coming in contact with foreign articlesor substances at road crossings, this eguipment has been ingeniously pro-tected, making it impossible for the engine equipment to come in contact withanything but the track instrument. The St. L., P. & N. Ry Co. have a totalof sixteen (16) engines, all of which are equipped in this manner. Now, turning to the tracks of the P., D. 6c E. Ry Co., it will be observedfrom the plan that derails are located the customary distance from the cross-ing, which is four hundred (400) feet in each case. These derails are operatedautomatically in conjunction with the signal by the same kind of a powermachine as operates the track instruments and signals on the St. L., P. & track. The method of energizing the power machine is somewhatdifferent, owing to the fact that most of the trains over this track consist onlyof an engine and one or tw
