Buffeted by strong winds the Royal Netherlands Navy’s gigantic warship HNLMS Johan de Witt was eased through the Thames Barrier at Woolwich. The warship’s officers and crew were in attendance at the remembrance weekend in London. The warship was launched in May 2006 and is a Rotterdam-class landing platform and dock. Contained within her hull and superstructure are helicopters, landing craft including 170 armoured personnel carriers or 33 main battle tanks. The warship ’s crew of 146 and 555 marines has seen service against pirates in Somalia and provided humanitarian assistance in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian.
