Common daisies and poppies growing wild and free in May sunshine in the graveyard of the Parish Church of St Nicolas at Pevensey, East Sussex, England, UK, contrast with straight lines of coursed flint across the west front of the church, built in Early English Gothic style and completed in 1216, during the reign of King John.

Pevensey, East Sussex, England, UK: a profusion of wild flowers, mainly yellow and white common daisies, carpet the churchyard of the medieval Parish Church of Saint Nicolas as shadows lengthen in late afternoon May sunshine. The exuberance of the natural floral display contrasts with the rigid lines of coursed flint across the west front of the church, which was built in the Early English Gothic architectural style and was completed in 1216, during the reign of King John. In those days, Pevensey was a larger town and a prosperous seaport and a few years earlier, John had granted a royal charter making it one of the Cinque Ports. The church, dedicated to the patron saint of seafarers, was built close to the place on Pevensey Bay where William, Duke of Normandy, had landed with his army in 1066. Shortly afterwards, William defeated Anglo Saxon King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings to secure the throne of England for himself - plus the title of William the Conqueror. The church is a complete and uniform example of the Early English style, altered very little since it was built and one of only 12 Grade 1 Listed churches in East Sussex. The masonry includes a large proportion of Eastbourne greensand and local flint and massive roof timbers inside were hand carved and jointed from Sussex oak in about 1205.
