An act was passed in 1798 dividing the province into twenty-two counties, which were grouped into nine districts. Thetownships of Ancaster, Barton, Binbrook, Glanford and Salt-fleet formed part of the new district of Niagara, while Beverlyand Flamboro remained in the old Home district. From j 800 to 1816 no changes were made in any of the muni-cipalities around the Head of the Lake. At the latter date thenew district of Gore was formed from parts of the Niagaraand Home districts. It was named in honor of Sir FrancisGore, one of the early governors of this province. From itsearliest settlement to this date, North Wentworth had for elec-toral purposes, formed part of the west riding of York, andSouth Wentworth part of the first riding of Lincoln. Thisnew district was divided into two new counties named respec-tively Wentworth and Halton. The former comprised thetownships of Saltfleet (including Burlington Beach), Bartonincluding Burlington Heights), Binbrook, Glanford, Ancaster,and so much of the county of Haldimand as lies between Dun-das street and the village
