Soleil synchrotron processors, Saclay, France. This research facility is home to the Soleil particle accelerator, which is used in particle physics research. The synchrotron is a ring with a circumference of 354 metres. Electrons are accelerated close to the speed of light within the ring, providing a powerful source of X-rays. The synchrotron is used to observe the properties of very small or dilute structures, to simulate atomic processes that require a lot of energy, and to observe processes that happen very fast, such as structural changes in proteins.
