We are led into these observations by seeing recently, in a work of some preten-sions, a cut showing how to make a layer. It looked very nice in print; and, when done with a trembling hand and beating heart, inthe way described, is often successful. In a nurs-ery, however, where time is money, and the oldmaxim that the more haste the less speed isswallowed with a due mixture of savory mentalcondiments, a quick, steady workman is of greatimportance, and then the way of layering here.
