Atmospheric sunlight over Castlerigg Stone Circle, Lake District National Park,Cumbria, England, UK
One of Europe’s oldest stone circle, Castlerigg Stone Circle is though to date back to around 3000 BCE. It is surrounded by several of the region’s highrst mountains, namely Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra. The heaviest stone has been estimated to weigh around 16 tons and the tallest stone measures approximately high. Unusually, inside the circle is a rectangle of stones known as the Sanctuary. The purpose of the circle and the sanctuary are subject to conjecture and debate.
