Conrad Gessner (1516-1565), Swiss naturalist. Gessner compiled a comprehensive survey (Historiae animalium) of the animal kingdom, presenting known facts, rather than myths. Gessner also wrote a book on fossils. He died of the plague in 1565. At the time, he was trying to compile a survey of the plant kingdom. The Latin title is: 'Conradus Gesnerus, Medeus and Philosophus'. This artwork appeared as Plate 4 in volume 22 (1934) of Isis, the official publication of the History of Science Society. The article (on five great naturalists of the sixteenth century) was by Eugene Willis Gugder (1866-1956).
