Sir Matthew Lister (1571-1656), physician to English royalty in the years leading up to the English Civil War. Square format detail of engraving created in 1646 from a portrait painted by Flemish artist Paul van Somer (1576-1621).

Square format detail of an original antique copperplate engraving of Sir Matthew Lister (1571-1656), physician to royalty in the years leading up to the English Civil War. The engraving was created in 1646 from a portrait painted by Flemish artist Paul van Somer (1576-1621). Sir Matthew Lister ('Sr Mathew Lister Knight and Dr of Phisic', according to the engraving's inscription) served as physician to Anne of Denmark, wife of King James 1 of England and VI of Scotland, and to their son, King Charles I. In 1607, Lister was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians of London and, in 1614, was sent to the Lord Mayor to plead, successfully, that the city had no right to command the fellows of the college to bear arms. Paul van Somer was born in Antwerp but relocated to London where Anne of Denmark already regarded him as her favourite artist.
