Father Murphy wasstationed as curate of the Portland Cathedral, Portland, Maine,during the years 1882 and 1883; transferred to Massachusetts hewas curate in St. Marys Church, Cambridgeport, in the SacredHeart Church of East Boston, and in St. Patricks Church, in Natick he organized four hundred boys as the John BoyleOReilly Cadets, and he also organized the John Boyle OReilly.
