In 1773, Martin Phifer endeavored to get a new charterfor the Charlotte school under the title of Queens his effort was unsuccessful, the people of the townin the next year began a school under that name as successorto Queens College, which had been abandoned. ThomasPolk, Abraham Alexander and others, persevered in theface of repeated disaster in their desire to have a high gradeschool in Charlotte.
