He went to New York andembarked in the brokerage business under the firmnameof Grant & Ward. The latter proved a villain,wrecked Grants fortune, and for larceny was sent tothe penitentiary. The General was attacked withcancer in the tliroat, but suffered in his stoic-likemanner, never complaining. He was re-instated asGeneral of the Army and retired by Congress.
