The doge of Venice pictured here is Pietro Gradenigo who served as doge from 1289 to 1311. A doge was the chief magistrate of the Republic of Venice, an office that lasted for more than 1000 years. The first doge served about 700 and the last abdicated in 1797, with the coming of Napoleon. Once elected by the city-state's aristocracy, a doge served until he died. The illustration dates to 1882.
