In a spirit-ed caricature entitled Aopera-glass for theyear 1777, it is suggestedthat these spacious curlsshould be turned to a use-ful purpose:— Behold how Jemmy treats the fan*,And makes a telescope of hair !How will this suit high-headed lasses,If curls are turned to optic glasses ? The extravagant costume of this and the followingyears is best caricatured in a plate representing fourladies playing at cards,—a reflection, at the same time,upon the violent passion for gaming which character-ized this age, and which was attended with so manytragical consequences. Two of the ladies are herequarrelling; one having accused the other of bad play,her antagonist is preparing to decide the dispute withthe candlestick.
