Arnold's Crew Escape Battle of Lake Champlain


On October 11, 1777, American Revolutionary general Benedict Arnold had his fleet between Valcour Island and the western shore of Lake Champlain. The British Admiral Carleton had his fleet by Cumberland Head. The British win. Arnold's ship "Congress" is bombed by the British and catches fire. Arnold orders his men to leap ashore. After every man has left the vessel, he lets himself into the water by a rope and wades to the shore.
