Great Eastern ship. Historical illustration of the Great Eastern passenger liner. This ship, designed by the British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was the largest ship in the world at her launch in 1858, being over 200 metres long. The Great Eastern was one of the first transatlantic liners and had a double hull for safety. In 1862 she struck an uncharted rock in Long Island Sound, which tore a 25-metre-long hole in her outer hull. However, her inner hull held and she later sailed safely into New York harbour. The Titanic, which sank in 1912, had a single hull, which was more cost-effective but less safe.
