InSight lander on Mars. The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) lander arrived on Mars on 26 November 2018. This image, showing the instruments on the spacecraft's deck, was taken by the lander's Instrument Deployment Camera (IDC) on its robotic arm. The grapple of the robotic arm is at top. In the foreground is a copper-coloured hexagonal cover protecting the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure instrument (SEIS), a seismometer that will measure marsquakes. The grey dome is the wind and thermal shield, which will be placed over SEIS. At left is a black cylindrical instrument, the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Probe (HP3), which will drill up to 5 metres below the Martian surface, measuring heat released from the interior of the planet. The Martian surface of Elysium Planitia is in the background. The InSight lander's findings will improve our understanding of the evolution of the inner solar system's rocky planets. Image acquired on 4 December 2018.
