Spirillum volutans. Light micrograph of a single Spirillum volutans bacterial cell. This is a characteristically spiral-shaped or helical curved rod. Tail-like flagella are seen emerging from both poles of the cell which allow the bacterium to move. S. volutans is one of the largest bacteria known and occurs commonly in stagnant freshwater habitats. Magnification x500 at 35mm size.
