Dead Tilapia fish lie on the alkali flats of the south shore of Southern California's Salton Sea

Dead Tilapia fish lie on the alkali flats of the south shore of Southern California's Salton Sea, a saline lake occupying the lowest elevations of the Salton Sink, part of the larger Colorado Desert in Southern California, north of the Imperial Valley. The salinity of the lake is about 44,000 mg/L, greater than ocean water. Although Tilapia can survive in brackish water, periodic massive algae growth in this inland sea depletes oxygen in the water, causing fish to die by the thousand.
