Comrade Hanks was born in Mans-field, Conn., March 4, 1841. He tookpart in the engagements during June,1862, on James Island, where he con-tracted a sickness which prematurelysevered his connection with the great-uncle, Benjamin Hanks, wasColonel of a Connecticut regiment dur-ing the War of the Revolution. Com-rade Hanks younger brother served in the 21st Connecticut In-fantry. His two elder brothers both sent substitutes and aidedthe Government at home during the war, one by making bul-lets in New York City and the other manufacturing blue warpsfor army clothing at Marlborough, JAHES HAYES, of Granby, Conn., enlisted November 22, 1861; mus-tered in United States service same day; died at Beaufort, S. C,July 18, 1862. ANDREW HOLBROOK, of Seymour, Conn, (see portrait and incident,page 301), enlisted December 2, 1861; mustered in United Statesservice same day; honorably discharged December 2, 1864, time ofenlistment having expired. He received a common-school education at theBungay school in his native town, after which he worked on hisfathers farm until he reached the age of iS, when lie went west toOhio and farmed for two years.
